Bequests and Caring for your Pets after your death

Thank you for your interest in including Hunter Animal Rescue in your estate planning. As a not-for-profit animal charity that receives no government assistance, we rely on compassionate animal lovers to continue saving homeless animals in New South Wales. By including Hunter Animal Rescue Inc. in your will, you’ll be providing veterinary care, rehabilitation and rehoming services for homeless animals long after your lifetime.

We think it’s important for you to be aware where bequest money actually goes. Our purpose is to keep animals safe, healthy and happy until they find loving homes. That means that your bequest money will be used to save lives.

To make a bequest, what do I do?

HAR recommends that you consult with your solicitor in writing your will to ensure that your intentions are clearly stated.  It is important that the correct wording is used, and that the correct title of ‘Hunter Animal Rescue’ is stated (rather than the acronym ‘HAR’, which is a commonly used term).

Obviously, the choice is yours, but your bequest could include a specific sum of money, property, shares or possessions.  As a bequest, many people choose ‘the proportion of residue’ option.  This enables you to give your family, friends and charity the proportion or percentage of your estate that you decide.

Subject to more detailed advice from your solicitor, Hunter Animal Rescue suggests inclusion of the following:

“I give and bequeath free of all duties to Hunter Animal Rescue:

  1. The sum of  [insert $ amount] of my Estate,

OR

  1. The residue of my Estate 

OR

  1. [insert amount] % amount of my Estate,

I declare that the receipt of the Treasurer or other authorised officer shall be sufficient discharge to my trustees.”

You may also use the following wording to gift all or part of a deceased estate:

“I GIVE a […insert quantum of share, for example one half share…] of my residuary estate UPON TRUST for Hunter Animal Rescue for its general purposes absolutely. I DECLARE a general charitable intention.”
